THE IMAGE OF TIME

Surfaces and Plasters: Reflections on Conservation

The practice of restoring and maintaining the plastered surfaces and their colours, despite some progress, is in general still disappointing. The interventions are often rude and wrong, even from a purely technical point of view; other times they are of better quality, but too extensive and heavy, oblivious to one of the fundamental criteria of restoration, that of the 'minimum intervention'. The surfaces, in fact, are certainly 'places of decay' but also of historical evidence and significant aesthetic values.

Colour in Architecture

and Some Thoughts About the Quartiere Coppedè in Rome

Compared to past decades, the study of materials and painting techniques of ancient architectural surfaces has taken considerable steps. There is also a corresponding resumption of ‘traditional’ manual skills. This operational maturation, however, has not been accompanied by a similar conceptual maturation nor by an adequate specific consideration of the new and urgent ‘colour problem’ as a matter of urban relevance. Then concepts, such as that of the ‘layer’ or ‘sacrifice surface’, have been transferred from the field of technical physics to the conservation field without adequate mediation. A strange and partial idea of restoration and maintenance, isolating the building from its context and moving away from the more general reflection on the matter, ended up favouring a line of real ‘reperfecting’ in the best cases, while in others it was a matter of casual recolouring, more or less old-fashioned.
The consequences of all this are rather serious and put at risk the same historical consistency and the documentary qualities of the buildings thus restored. There is therefore a problem of conceptual and methodological clarification and, in parallel, also of adequate training of professionals and workers. Frequently we can see exaggerate interventions on the ancient surfaces while already only respecting the prudential recommendations of the always valid Italian Restoration Charter of 1972 could be done less and better.
In other words, it is a matter of succeeding in raising the practice of restoring plastered surfaces from today’s level to that which, after years of intense research, has been achieved in the field of the conservation of stone materials outdoors and, more clearly, of other figurative arts, sculpture and above all painting.
Alongside so many bad examples, there is no shortage of good ones like the case, which is referred to in the title, of the Ambassadors Mansion in Rome, a work of the architect Gino Coppedè.

Central Italy earthquake: rebuilding and identity of places

Besides the restoration of the best known monuments the problem arises of how to deal with the minor architectural heritage, such as the heritage of the smaller mountains, small towns and villages.

The preservation of these monuments is important not only for sophisticated cultural reasons but for a real appreciation of traditional urban qualities which help facilitate relations with neighbours, social exchanges and the local economy.

Furthermore we can confirm that the rebuilding is essentially a topic connected to the surrounding landscape. Therefore the options for the intervention and settlement have to be chosen correctly.

So then it is necessary to create a cultured and responsible restoration project that is committed, flexible and well researched. Finally and above all else the project should not be artificially separated from the topics of stabilisation and seismic activity.
