La costruzione dei portali monumentali nelle campagne sarde rappresenta un fenomeno limitato ad un arco temporale compreso tra il XVII e il XIX secolo e ad uno specifico contesto geografico che si estende in alcune aree del nord Sardegna (Sassari e Alghero) e soprattutto nelle fertili pianure del Campidano di Oristano, area d’indagine del presente contributo. Lo studio si pone l’obiettivo di individuare e delineare brevemente le principali tipologie architettoniche, le tecniche costruttive adottate e le più importanti problematiche di degrado, evidenziando, in ultimo, la necessità di urgenti e mirati interventi di restauro, per la conservazione e la valorizzazione, tanto delle emergenze architettoniche, quanto dei singoli siti e del paesaggio del quale sono parte imprescindibile.

The construction of monumental portals in the Sardinian countryside is a phenomenon limited to a period between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. It is also linked to a specific geographical context that covers some areas of northern Sardinia (Sassari and Alghero) and especially Oristano’s fertile Campidano plains, the area where this survey was carried out. The study aims to identify and briefly outline the main architectural typologies, the techniques used in their construction and the most serious problems of degradation. Finally, the article will highlight the targeted restoration, conservation and enhancement work that is urgently needed to deal not only with this particular kind of architectural degradation, but also with that of the individual sites and of the landscape in which these portals are such a key feature.
