THE RESTORATION OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Buildings of the Modern Movement
The text looks at the complex theoretical and technical challenges involved in the restoration of Modern Movement architecture, highlighting how these buildings age quickly due to their inherent weakness. Unlike the restoration of historic buildings, which aims to preserve the original materials and the ‘patina of time’, the conservation of Modernist architecture focuses on preserving the design concept and formal image rather than the materials from which it is built; these ones are often considered expendable because they are industrial and therefore replicable. Given that the restoration of the Modern Movement buildings does not enjoy special status compared to that of historic buildings, the importance of a new culture of maintenance and prevention is emphasised to ensure the longevity of buildings that have been found to suffer from premature deterioration.
