L’architettura razionalista offre una vasta casistica di materiali e tecnologie costruttive moderne e costituisce una sfida interessante nel momento in cui si rende necessario intervenire per il restauro di monumenti ed edifici. Costruita negli anni ’30 del ‘900 in pietra naturale, la chiesa di Predappio mostrava degradi per i quali sono stati impiegati approcci specifici. Le puliture sono state calibrate rispetto alla qualità delle superfici e alla causa della macchia o del deposito, secondo l’approccio metodologico del restauro tradizionale ma tenendo conto delle caratteristiche specifiche dei materiali analizzate mediante l’utilizzo di un laboratorio mobile. Nell’intervento era prevista anche la ricostruzione di un’ampia porzione del timpano caduta e con problemi di tenuta e statici. Si è proceduto al reintegro con metodi e materiali innovativi e leggeri in un’ottica di miglioramento delle problematiche strutturali. Il cantiere ha dimostrato, al di là di speculazioni teoriche, che il restauro dell’architettura moderna deriva metodi e tecnologie dal restauro dell’edilizia storica, restando invariato e chiaro l’obiettivo di conservazione della materia.

Rationalist architecture offers a vast array of modern building materials and technologies and becomes an interesting challenge when it’s necessary to intervene for the restoration of monuments and buildings. Built in the '30s in natural stone, the Predappio church showed degradations for which specific approaches were used. The cleanings were calibrated on the quality of the surfaces and the cause of the stain or deposit, according to the methodological approach of traditional restoration but taking into account the specific characteristics of the materials analyzed with a mobile laboratory. The intervention also involved the reconstruction of a large portion of the fallen tympanum with static problems. We reintegrated the material loss with innovative methods and materials, improving structural problems. Beyond theoretical speculations, the work has shown that the restoration of modern architecture derives methods and technologies from the restoration of historic buildings, while the objective of conservation of the material remains unchanged and clear.
