The Orsini-Odescalchi castle in Bracciano

The Orsini-Odescalchi castle in Bracciano (Rome), which retains some of the elements of the XV and XVI century, is an artifact of great architectural and artistic quality and of particular historical interest. Although the castle is described in numerous publications there aren’t recent studies on it. Based on this finding, the Town hall of Bracciano and the "Sapienza" University of Rome started a research with the availability of the Odescalchi property. They intend to investigate the history of the monument, also with the support of a new full architectural survey realized by University with laser scanner technology.
In the previous issue of the magazine the palace and its fortifications were presented, proposing the hypothesis of a second loggia in the court. In this second part the author testifies, also through an ancient plan of the castle, of the presence of a further loggia today disappeared, outlining for the palace some attributive hypotheses.

The Orsini-Odescalchi castle in Bracciano

Research project and first interpretative hypotheses - Part 1

The Orsini-Odescalchi castle in Bracciano (Rome), which retains some of the elements of the XV and XVI century, is an artifact of great architectural and artistic quality and of particular historical interest. Although the castle is described in numerous publications there aren’t recent studies on it. They intend to investigate the history of the monument, also with the support of a new full architectural survey realized by University with laser scanner technology. This contribution reflects the result of the critical reading of the existing bibliography from the nineteenth century and of the preliminary observations made on the monument. They allowed to contextualize, in light of recent studies, the theses of the various authors on the Renaissance period, anticipating some preliminary interpretative hypotheses.
