COME TENDERE L’ORECCHIO?

HOW TO KEEP YOUR EAR EARING?

A heretical and sentimental dialogue between a shy architect and a shy philosopher

An epochal waste has struck Italy. The Resilience Plan sometimes causes a strange bulimia of exaggerated and carefree restoration interventions that make no sense. The dialogue explores the causes of this phenomenon by retracing the theory of architectural restoration from its nineteenth-century origins. Perhaps we need a new ethics of limits that makes use of the virtue of shyness. It is not an illness but a more discreet way of conceiving the relationship with heritage. Thus, we propose a deepening of knowledge and an emotional involvement that even goes as far as not doing. A small ethical revolution. Perhaps the salvation of buildings depends on our ability to listen to them?

THE RESTORATION OF THE MISERICORDIA

the beating heart of a community

In these times of forgetfulness and illnesses that lead to the loss of memory, using the virtue of Mercy to take care of degraded ancient buildings is a strong counteraction. A real bag of resistance so you don't forget. The restoration of an ancient complex in the historic center of Crema intended to combat Alzheimer's disease is an opportunity to think about the testimonies of the past and to prepare for the future in an excellent way by starting to build it together.

GREY, THE COLOR OF THE PRESENT

The color gray has a curious history. This strange non-colour is a fluid and ambiguous colour, between light and dark, which has caused much discussion. It is the color of the mouse's fur, the elephant's skin, the sandstone of our cities, the asphalt of the streets, the cloudy days of November. Its meaning is associated with the average, neutral, ordinary, undecided, habitual, in short with everyday life. In the restoration, gray isthe dominant shade of the facades altered by surface deposits that hide the colors of the materials. However, can gray help us identify in the ordinary a potential act of resistance to dominant and normalizing thoughts?

rec_mag 174

THE PANIC OF AUTHENTICITY

We are witnessing increasingly frequent disappearances of the interesting heritage of twentieth-century architecture in our cities. But thinking about it, this violence has to do with the concept of authenticity. Perhaps a philosophical reflection can help us understand how to counter this trend.  Perhaps a renewed effort towards greater attention and listening is needed, a hospitable listening to these architectures which, even if they are not masterpieces, are the flesh of our history.

IL PROFUMO DEL RESTAURO

Architettura e olfatto

THE SCENT OF RESTORATION

Architecture and smell

Today our relationship with architecture is largely shaped by sight, and yet we forget that the perception of spaces is governed not only by images but also by smells. However, smell is one of the most underrated senses in our society.
Maybe we should make an effort to observe how even in the field of restoration smells play an important role in our perception. Perhaps among the traditional parameters of judgment that we use in restoration we should also add the olfactory quality.

RAMMENDARE I TETTI

MENDING THE ROOF

Palazzo Monti della Corte, Franciacorta

The practice of maintenance is opposed in every way. Furthermore, since it is no longer practiced, its rules have been lost. It is also dislike by the expensive provisional works rightly imposed by the safety regulations.
Thus, in order to react to this situation and to testify with concrete facts the possibility of changing the way of working, the re-proposition of the old profession of roofers in a contemporary key was experimented on in many construction sites. These are those masons-mountaineers who traditionally took care of the maintenance of the roofs with special techniques and scheduled periodic inspections. Here the results of
the mending of the roofs of Palazzo Monti della Corte in Franciacorta are presented, where a philosophy of intervention was adopted on tiptoe, without imposing but with the will to inherit.

I propose to use a new tool to document our experience in restoration work: the Anti Curriculum. It will describe all the operations that have not been carried out in a building. The best intervention will be the one for which I did the least. this does not mean doing nothing, but doing it intelligently and consciously.

WE ARE MADE OF WOOD : INVITATION TO CORRESPONDENCE

At school they make us study the stone, bronze and iron ages but in reality man lives in an uninterrupted age of the wood. Also in the history of architecture, wood always plays a minor role. In reality, architecture is based on the relationship with wood. I propose to use a new concept for materials of the past: correspondence.
Correspondence is not a theory but an invitation, an attitude that in my opinion would do everyone a lot of good because of its educational and transformative nature. Maybe we will be able to return to the discreet and timid joys of the Wood Age?

Mistakes and combinations to never make!

The coat incentivized by the recent tax bonuses works well for new buildings but does not produce particular advantages on old buildings that have totally different characteristics. On the contrary, its use is usually negative and can cause many problems. Our cities and our relevant buildings have been able to maintain, to a large extent, their architectural characteristics even in dark times such as the two world wars, it does not seem appropriate to put them at risk for the casual application of such a forgetful rule.

SHY PROPOSAL

The earth is a closed system, in which our stay is only temporary. And instead of acting like responsible guests, preserving what makes our presence possible, we have created a system that endangers our very existence and that of many other beings who inhabit this planet. Just visit one of our construction sites: we extract raw materials, use them, then throw them away. To counteract this fact, on the basis of a book by T. Rau and S. Oberhuber, I propose to establish a passport of materials in view of their recycling. The Matasto could be a smart way to protect the rights of materials and take a step towards a circular economy.

SPEED UP

The deadlines of the various levels of project in Italy are really short. This attitude of underestimating the quality aspects and overestimating the quantity ones is attested by the law: a project of restoration of a monument is treated in the same way as a cleaning service. A big change in this field is required.

Epigraphs

The epigraphs are very important for the understanding of urban life, their importance lies in the fact that they are documents that directly tie us with whomever wrote them; they have been carved during different circumstances of life, with different goals and by different personalities.

FEET ON THE GROUND

The land, with the discovery of its fragility (highlighted by the news of daily catastrophes), can guide us towards a more fruitful relationship with the nature which we belong; it is necessary to mend the attitude with the land as a shared common history.

OPPOSITION RESISTANCE

Nowadays in our country we are conscious about what needs to be done to change the situation, the tragedy is that no one does it. However I think that the lamentations about the Italy of today, important even if asphyxiating, should for once be omitted from the forecasts on the Italy of tomorrow. Perhaps we could examine the opposition resistance which like a warning light, is a small lifeline that allows us to see something good for our future.

USA E GETTA

DISPOSABLE

To preserve our cultural heritage we need to radically change the traditional mode of operation based on the modern practice of “planned obsolescence”. We must try to discard restoration as the only possible solution and, on the contrary, promote a patient care and a new sensibility focused on a specific moral attitude.

GUARITORE O CURATORE?

HEALER OR CURATOR

The “site - healer” architect (with all the paraphernalia of the modern era) will become a “site - curator”. This means that we’ll pass from the traditional optimistic idea of healing (a city, a building, an object) to a problematic idea of continuously healing. It involves learning to assist, i.e. to stand close to the sites with patience, intelligence and grace; in a nutshell the passage will be from the therapy to the cure.

DALL'EVENTO ALL'AVVENTO

FROM THE EVENT TO THE ADVENT

Today the transition from the restoration priority, conceived as an exceptional occurrence, to the conservation priority, as the will of knowledge and constant care, is inevitable. The constant care is ensured by a careful and intelligent preventive action. The main message is exactly the desire to move from the “culture of the event”, which features large events with exhibitions and re-restoration, to the “culture of the advent”, based on the constant and intelligent care of our heritage and on the not-passive wait for what is yet to be but could be.
